Jazz Age Lawn Party

This weekend, Alex, Toby and I took the ferry over to the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor's Island.
A jazz band played old-timey tunes, and there was a tug-of-war, pie contest and Charleston lessons.
People dressed up in fabulous 1920's ensembles--lots of pearls, suspenders and straw hats. (I, of course, wore a nursing shirt:)
Toby mingled with the dapper crowd.
And this girl wore the most fabulous swimsuit (which she had made herself). Yowza!

Fall trend #1: Army jacket

This fall, the fashion trends are SO adorable (and accessible), so I figured I'd make a little list of them this week. First up, army jackets! Would you wear this tomboy look? Perfect for the flea market and cider mill.

Have a fun weekend!

My dears, what are your plans this weekend? Alex and I have a "date afternoon" today, and he's taking me on The Shark Boat, a hilarious boat that goes 45 miles per hour in the New York Harbor (you get splashed!). I've wanted to go on it for ages, and I'm so excited about it. Hope you have a good one, and here are a few great posts from around the web...

Four ways to style bangs.

Summer tan lines. (Which are you?)

Tiffany-lamp-inspired wedding cake.

My favorite red lipstick = Devious. (It's the perfect cherry red.)

Don't we all want to be this girl?

Now I'm dying to go to Maine.

Such a cute baby!

Japanese diving women. Incredible.

100 ideas for wedding favors. (Here's what we did.)

Plus, five Cup of Jo posts you might have missed:
* French flower markets.
* Bike rush hour.
* Baby accents.
* Dog photo booth.
* Leopard print.

Bathroom art

I love how Vicente Wolf hung this Tina Barney photo over his bathtub. "They're looking at me, I'm looking at them," he says. Cheeky!

Cookie swap

So, last night, I hosted the Cookie Swap!
The ladies came over at 7pm with containers full of lemon squares, magic bars, homemade thin mints, and Cornflake cookies, among many others. The coffee table was overflowing. (Toby made a quick cameo before bedtime; you can see him cuddled in my friend Samantha's arms above.)
We passed around pitchers of ice-cold milk (and bottles of wine), and people found cozy spots on the floor to hang out.
Megan (right) made her grandmother's recipe for bark with almonds, chocolate and Matzoh!
Susan Cernek, a fashion editor at Glamour, didn't have time to make cookies, so she brought bottles of nail polish instead. :)
Alex came home just in time to say hello to the ladies, including pretty Lee from Copenhagen.
Toby zonked out about fifteen minutes into the festivities, but we still doted on him (and his sweet bald head) by video monitor.

It was a really fun evening and yummy excuse to get together. Thank you so much to everyone who came! xoxo

3-year-old charmer

Oh my goodness, this video of a 3-year-old reciting a gorgeous (and long!) poem is one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. I can't believe he memorized the whole thing.

Travel fantasy: Poet's loft

When Abbey found this amazing California rental house, my jaw dropped. The house is near Point Reyes, where you could hike to the lighthouse and eat fresh cheese. And it has a hot tub. Damn. Wouldn't you love to stay there?

Nursing baby deer

Speaking of camping, when Marina and her family were camping in Maine, they peeked out of their tents and saw a nursing baby deer! How sweet.

Sleeping bags

You guys made camping sound like so much fun (bonfires! ghost stories! air mattresses!) that I couldn't help looking up a few cute sleeping bags, just in case.

P.S. This one is nuts.

Fall style

I've been wearing the same nursing tees for the past twelve weeks (sorry, Alex!) and am itching to dress up a little more. This pretty girl is my inspiration. What a pitch-perfect autumn ensemble. xo

Have a smoochy weekend!

My lovelies, what are your plans for the weekend? Toby and I walked to the water today with two friends and ate potato salad; and tomorrow, Alex and I have a "date afternoon" and are thinking of going swimming here! Hope you have a great one, and in the meantime, here are a few fun posts from around the web...

Funny moments caught on camera.

How lovely to wear a braid at your wedding.

Embroidered newspaper.

Cigarette pants. They even sound cool.

Brides! Two beautiful vintage wedding dresses here and here.

Rad old-school GQ covers.

Triplets! Can you imagine?

What a pretty yellow blouse.

Seasonal vegetable calendar.

LOVE the idea of getting married at home. How sweet and relaxed to be in your own living room.

Alexa Chung's collaboration with Madewell debuts September 10th. Thumbs up.

A.P.C. fall fashion

A.P.C.'s fall collection is pretty perfect. Corduroy shorts and moccasins have now soared to the top of my wish list.

P.S. I love that they call sweaters "pullovers."
P.P.S. Legs, hot damn!

Mantra

Remember this hilarious little dude? When I saw the illustration last year, I made it my mantra for whenever people left salty blog comments. (It's such a smart thing to keep in mind, so you don't take things too personally.) Well, now there's a letterpress print! Genius.

Stone house

Oh my goodness, how rad is this stone house in Portugal? It looks like it has a toothache.

Birthday picnic + family photos

For her husband's birthday, Elizabeth surprised him with a Central Park picnic. She decorated a bench in his honor, made a seven-layer chocolate cake from scratch, and brought along their sweet daughter and the family dog. Then she had an amazing photographer take family portraits, so they'd always remember the occasion. (Good thing her husband wore a cute outfit to work that day!) Isn't that an incredible and creative present?

Toby the charmer

Sometimes I wonder if Toby really knows who I am. But yesterday I went to get him after his nap, and this sweet face was waiting for me. It made my heart sing. (You can imagine the smooches that ensued.)

Breezy wedding dresses

New York Magazine's Weddings Issue did a story about this summer's light-as-air wedding dresses. Aren't they stunning? See the full slideshow here.

Scratch map

How cool is this Scratch Map? You scratch off the places you've been with a penny!

Legging jeans = a little dance

My friend from Glamour says that you should only buy things that "make you want to do a little dance." Isn't that genius? This year, that single phrase has made me way pickier (in a good way) and kept me from buying those ho-hum pieces that just end up sitting in my closet. Well, I've been searching for a new pair of jeans, and these adorable Gap legging jeans (worn here by the adorable Annabel) make me want to get down. :)

P.S. Annabel also makes clogs look cool.

Travel fantasy: Cinque Terre

Jacinta just went to Cinque Terre, and her gorgeous photos make me want to hop on a plane. Wouldn't you love to be eating fried fish and jumping off rocks into the sea right about now? I can almost feel that refreshing, goose-pimply water.
